Movember

In 2011, more than 240,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Thousands of men worldwide will this Movember, the month formerly known as November, lay down their razors and embrace a ‘tache to raise both funds and awareness for men’s health.

So boys, become a Mo Bro by registering here and start getting fuzzy… But will you go for The Chaplin, The Sigmund or The Borat? I obviously would recommend The Gosling...

The F Word: Famine is the Real Obscenity

The famine in East Africa has reached desperate heights.

30,000 children have died in just over 3 months.

12 million people are at further risk.

Please watch ONE’s new video below, ‘The F Word: Famine is the Real Obscenity’ which features, amongst others, George Clooney, Bono, Colin Farrell and Bill Nighy, and then sign THIS PETITION putting pressure on the world’s leaders at the upcoming G20 summit in November to focus their attention on this famine and food crisis.

The National English Ballet Theatre

Note to self: Never stand next to ballerinas… You will feel like an Oompa Loompa...

Last week I attended a fundraiser in aid of the New English Ballet Theatre held at BAFTA. The dinner and auction were followed by an elegant performance by some of the 16 beautifully costumed dancers who have already joined the company.

NEBT was founded by choreographer and artistic director Karen Pilkington Miksa in the wake of huge cuts in funding for the arts in the UK. This ambitious venture will help to nurture and promote the careers of young, highly trained ballerinas whilst bringing brand new and exciting works to the stage.

Sienna Miller's East African Mission

Last month actress Sienna Miller visited the Dolo Ado camps in eastern Ethiopia in her role as global ambassador for the International Medical Corps.

After overseeing their emergency nutrition programmes and meeting many of those gravely affected by the severe drought and famine, Sienna is now calling for greater attention to the current humanitarian crisis in East Africa, “Without immediate humanitarian intervention, more than 390,000 children are at risk of starvation.”

In some areas of Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia, a child is dying every six minutes and support is urgently needed to help the millions of people facing starvation in the already strained refugee camps.

For more information about this urgent appeal please go to the International Medical Corps website - you could, by donating some much needed money, help them deliver lifesaving nutrition and other basic supplies.

And so, Beulah London was born.

The Fashion Mile

Yesterday saw some of Britain’s top designers (including Christopher Kane, Sarah Burton, Katie Hillier, Erdem Moralioglu and Peter Pilotto) donning trainers (albeit it fabulous leopard print ones Charlotte Olympia!) to join in on the ‘Born To Walk Tall’ campaign where they walked alongside Sam Cam, the Save the Children and British Fashion Council Ambassador, on the first ever ‘Fashion Mile.’ Walking from Downing Street to Somerset House this fashionable herd showed their support for the vital, life-saving work of doctors, nurses and midwives worldwide in helping make sure that children live to take their first steps.

"It's heartbreaking that 8 million children under five die every year, simply because there is no doctor or nurse nearby to give them treatment. The mile we're walking today is dedicated to the inspirational health professionals who tirelessly make that journey - often covering substantial distances - to save the lives of children." Samantha Cameron.

Vivienne Westwood in Kenya

From Kenya With Love...

Having been raised in Kenya this project is particularly exciting for me...

Vivienne Westwood’s ethical range of handbags, made from environmentally sustainable materials in her second collaboration with Nairobi-based social enterprise Ethical Fashion Africa were unveiled earlier this year and the pictures taken on her last visit to Kenya are featured in her new A/W’11 ad campaign. Taken by photographer Juergen Teller some of the photos feature Kenyan supermodel, Ajuma and also local discoveries, Elsie and Sonnietta.

The project is designed to support and empower disadvantaged female artisans living in two of Nairobi’s slum areas Kibera and Korogocho by utilizing their creative skills – London based Vivienne Westwood’s confirms, “this is not charity, this is work… What I do, making bags, can make a difference. This project gives people control over their lives—charity doesn’t give control, it does the opposite, it makes them dependant.”

Available to buy here on Vivienne Westwood's Website
